Shatta Wale gives a voice to the voiceless and i like him for that - Rex Omar

Rex Omar Explains Why Shatta Wale Has Built a Strong Connection With Young Fans

Veteran Ghanaian musician Rex Omar has shared his perspective on why dancehall star Shatta Wale has developed such a strong and loyal fan base, particularly among young people.

According to Rex Omar, Shatta Wale’s outspoken and confrontational personality has played an important role in shaping his public image and connecting him with a section of Ghana’s youth.

Speaking on the Group Chat Podcast, hosted by media personality Nana Aba Anamoah, Rex Omar described Shatta Wale as a “fighter” and said he has great admiration for the dancehall artiste.

He argued that Shatta Wale’s career might have taken a different path if he had adopted a quieter and more restrained personality.

“Shatta Wale is a fighter, I like him so much, but trust me, if Shatta became like the so-called ‘decent artist’, nice guy and the quiet guy, if you offend him, he won’t say anything, expecting the music alone to speak for him, he wouldn’t have gotten this far,” Rex Omar said.

Rex Omar further suggested that Shatta Wale’s willingness to challenge people and respond strongly to criticism has helped him become a voice for some young Ghanaians.

He explained that the musician’s approach to confronting societal expectations resonates with young people who may feel ignored or unable to express themselves openly.

“Shatta became who he is because he decided to fight society. No matter who you are, if you say something to offend him, he will return it in double, and so he became a voice for a lot of the young hungry people,” he added.

The veteran musician also drew a connection between Shatta Wale’s outspoken nature and the experiences of young people when dealing with older generations.

Reflecting on his own upbringing, Rex Omar recalled situations where younger people were expected to accept the views of elders, even when they believed those views were unreasonable or incorrect.

“When I was growing up, you know when you have an issue with an elderly person, you know what the elderly person is doing is stupid, there is no sense in it, but because you are young, they will tell you the elderly is right even when the young person is right. So this silenced you,” he said.

Rex Omar believes that such experiences can create frustration among young people, and he sees Shatta Wale’s outspoken public persona as an outlet through which some of those frustrations are expressed.

His comments highlight his view that Shatta Wale’s appeal extends beyond his music, with his willingness to speak his mind and challenge people contributing to the strong connection he has established with his supporters.
