Queiroz Confident Black Stars Can Overcome Challenges Ahead of Gambia AFCON Qualifier

Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has admitted that Ghana’s national team is dealing with a number of challenges ahead of Tuesday’s AFCON qualifier against The Gambia, but he has made it clear that he does not consider the team itself to be the problem.

Speaking to the media on Monday, September 28, 2026, ahead of the crucial encounter, Queiroz explained that the technical team was working to identify solutions and ensure the players were properly prepared for the match.

“Black Stars are facing a couple of challenges, a couple of problems, but Black Stars is not a problem,” he stated.

The Portuguese coach stressed that challenges are an unavoidable part of professional life and said his responsibility was to find practical solutions rather than allow difficulties to affect the team’s confidence.

“Like everything in life, everything in life, in the hospitals, in the workshops, in the army, in the industry, in business, we face challenges, we face problems, and our duty as professionals is to solve the problems,” Queiroz explained.

According to the coach, the difficulties currently confronting the team should not be viewed as a threat to the identity or long-term prospects of the Black Stars.

“So my final statement is yes, we are facing some challenges. That’s the challenge that we have in front of us for Black Stars. That’s why we are Black Stars, but Black Stars was never a problem. Black Stars is not a problem, and Black Stars will never be a problem in the future,” he added.

Queiroz also reflected on Ghana’s previous outing in Ivory Coast, saying the team had taken valuable lessons from the performance. He revealed that particular attention had been given to improving the team’s effectiveness in front of goal.

“We always win or learn, and we learn something in that game,” he said.

The coaching staff, he noted, has focused extensively on key finishing situations during training, with the aim of making Ghana more clinical and purposeful in attack.

Queiroz said the players remain motivated and are looking forward to the challenge against The Gambia. He also appealed to supporters and the Ghanaian media to continue backing the team as it works through the issues ahead of the match.

“My message to the fans is a message of confidence,” he said, encouraging Ghanaians to trust the players and technical team.

On the team’s fitness situation, Queiroz confirmed that 22 players are available for selection. Ronald remains the only player whose participation is uncertain, with his final status expected to be determined after the team’s last training session.
