Hohoe MP Appeals for Assistance as Flooding Forces Over 3,000 from Their Homes

Hohoe Flooding: MP Appeals for Urgent Support as Thousands Are Displaced

Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, has called for immediate assistance for residents severely affected by flooding in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region.

Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Monday, September 28, the MP disclosed that more than 400 houses have been impacted, while over 3,000 people have been displaced and are currently in need of temporary accommodation.

The flooding occurred after torrential rains caused the River Dayi to overflow its banks, sending large volumes of water into communities situated along the river. Among the worst-affected areas is Zongo, where Mr. Tsekpo said more than half of the community has been inundated.

Residents forced to leave their homes have been moved to temporary locations, including classrooms, as authorities explore alternative accommodation and relief arrangements.

According to the MP, the magnitude of the disaster has stretched the resources and capacity of the Hohoe Municipal Assembly and other local authorities. He therefore appealed to individuals, organisations and other stakeholders to provide assistance to the affected communities.

“It’s overwhelming. The MP and the MCE alone cannot, in fact, we are not able to. We are calling for support,” he said.

Mr. Tsekpo also praised the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the security services for their efforts to evacuate residents from vulnerable areas and help prevent casualties.

He noted that the situation remains concerning, as floodwaters continue to rise in some locations even though the rainfall has subsided in Hohoe. He called for continued emergency assistance while authorities work to safeguard residents and provide more suitable shelter for those displaced.
